BLK: Senior Thesis

BLK is an exploration of the containment and release of meaning, under the restriction of black and white. For my senior thesis, I chose to execute a large-scale installation, composed of 7 posters, each paired with a uniquely shaped bottle and label. The show explores 7 words of 7 different languages and cultures that the English language doesn't have a translation for. The intent was to unfold a reflection on the universal quality of meaning and its' intrinsic poignancy throughout life, in both a contained and released manner.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Black & White - bland, boring, and overtly simple. I seek to revoke that.
Through a purposeful restriction of black and white, I am exploring the containment and release of meaning as it correlates with seven words. Seven untranslatable words, rooted in emotion.
BLK reflects this difficult, tangled and intangible meaning that exists within each word. It’s meaning that cannot be concisely stated or explained. It’s emotionally driven and hard to swallow at times.
It’s the essence of who we are as we go through life. It’s every moment that makes us in that single second, before we evolve into a new experience or moment.
My installation represents the release of meaning through complex, explosive typographical explorations. The work reflects containment through definitive restraint and simplistic language.
The release enables a reflective exploration through personal experiences, perspectives and observations. Whereas, the containment becomes metaphorically implemented through origin, essence and infusion.
Furthermore, the lack of color allows the viewer to feel what each word means to them on an individual level.
My hope is to inspire a reflection upon the installation, as to how these untranslatable words exist throughout life in tangible and intangible ways, how the meaning has impacted who you are and who you become, how it is contained and released, and developed and extinguished over a period of time.
